  • Scottish Audi owner in Kajaani

    Hi,
My Finnish skills aren't very good just yet (I'm doing Finnish classes just now) so I apologise for writing in English. I moved to Kajaani in November to be closer to my wife's family and so for the first time in many years I don't have Audi fan friends.

My current car is a B6 A4 avant 3.0 quattro sport with no modifications. In the previous 5 years I've had 13 Audi coupes, 3 Audi 80 saloons, an A6 and an S2 coupe. Most of these I repaired or took apart to use the pieces to repair other cars. The S2 I bought with severe damage and so I bought another shell and re-shelled all the parts to the new shell. Sadly I had to sell it to buy a family car (the A6), which an idiot then crashed into. So I bought the 3.0Q A4 and love it. It's not as fast as I expected but it's torquey and keeps me on the road just now since I'm not very experienced with winter driving. So what I'm saying is I love it but 2 turbos would make it more interesting.

Hopefully there are some members in the area that I could meet if you don't mind speaking english and you can have a laugh at my attempts to speak Finnish as I learn more.

I'm in need of advice for somewhere local to get an alloy wheel repaired and also where I should go to get a quote for a stainless steel exhaust

    Cheers

Welcome to Finland and to these forums !

Unfortunately I cannot help on finding local shops for what you need, but I'm sure there are people here who know. I guess some of the club members are at the ice track this weekend as Audiclub arranged the traditional winter driving happening. So might be a bit quieter weekend :)

As you seem to be really big Audi fan I recommend joining the Audiclub. There are some benefits such as small discount on parts bought through Teppo Kalske (club's official parts dealer). Original Audi parts are rather expensive when bought directly from Finland's own Audi stores, so Teppo handles orders from Germany and also some good replacement parts.

Thanks Jounii. I'll definitely join and try to make a few events to meet people (of course discount on parts will be nice. I know what Audi dealer prices can be like).

Where is the ice track by the way? It sounds like I've missed a really good opportunity.

      cheers

          Hi,

and welcome to Kajaani too. I hope you enjoy staying here.

There are a few machine Workshops; for example Koneistamo E.Moilanen, Koneistamo Alm, FineMetal. I think that you should ask first at Koneistamo E.Moilanen.

Maybe some workshop or a employee of a workshop (at his spare time?) would be interested in repairing your alloy wheel here at Kajaani, but if not I think that it might be best to ask L-Weld Oy (at Lappeenranta) or Rengasliike Amrif (at Järvenpää). They are known for alloy wheel repairs.

I have heard that it is also possible to fix a wheel at Oulu or Kuopio...

You could ask stainless steel exhaust from AD-Varaosamaailma or Korpi-Auto, but I think that it will be cheaper if you get it from Ebay, AudiClub etc.

I would say for the alloy wheel case that it's wise to separate the metal work and finishing work to different workshops. The ones who are well known for their talent for straightening alloy wheels aren't always so talented with finishing work, if they even offer the whole package. For the best results I would suggest to get the wheels straightened in one place and painted in other, real paint shop.

Hehee, nice to hear from you on Finnish forum too. Since we are all Audi nuts it's not that important what the language is. :)

Do you mean you want a custom exhaust or something like milltek cat back?

thanks for all the information guys. And good to see someone I know too :-D
the wheel has a crack on the back edge but I have no idea how it happened. I only found out it was there because a few days after I arrived in Kajaani after driving from Scotland I thought I had a flat tyre and the tyre repair place showed me the crack. I can't find a new wheel to replace it though. It's an 18" RS6 replica 8.5j. They need to be refurbished as my wife had a few parking accidents and they are so wide it's hard not to damage them so I will get that done after I have the crack repaired (if it's possible).

I'm going to Oulu tomorrow to see a friend so I could probably take the wheel with me to see about getting it repaired. Is there somewhere specific in Oulu that would be best to ask? If I don't get it done there I will start with Koneistamo E.Moilanen in Kajaani and see what happens. I really don't want to buy summer tyres for my 16" winter wheels if I can avoid it.

I would be happy enough with a miltek system but I think I will need to replace everything including the cats because my precats will need changed soon (and on both sides the cat and precats are single units). So I thought if I can find the money I could get sports cats fitted instead and get the whole system changed at the same time. I need to find a job before I spend all that money of course :-D

Tahkovuori isn't too far really. I hope I can get through to see the track. I think my car could be too low to try on the ice though and probably not fast enough if there are S cars driven by Finnish guys :-D I would just make an ass of myself.

                cheers

                  Welcome Noel!

PS. please don't sign messages in this forum. We're kind of fascist with the writing style. No hard feelings.

                    Thanks for the welcome

Mr Macrae you mean? Ah yes. I'll try not to go that far though :-)

No problem on the signature thing. All forums have their rules and I'm happy to go with them. How about pictures? Is it better to post a link instead of embedding? I have a pair of new OEM S8 cats to put in the for sale section because I though I might use them for the A4 but they are just a little bit too big.

I have no preference regarding embedding or using another pic-service. The problem with the other services are that this site will probably outlive that internet-startup and then the pics won't be available while the thread still is. Internet-arhechology will be a branch of science in a few years, note me saying this. When using the forum software's embed-functionality the pics are stored on the same server, which I feel is the right thing to do since the pics are, after all, tied to the thread on this forum.

However, in order to be able to store images here one has to be a member of the association. By joining you will get several benefits that will pay the membership fee many times over. One beeing our spare-parts channel.

You're absolutely right. It's frustrating to find an old thread on a forum only to find that the associated images don't exist any more. I'm happy to join audiclub. Is it correct that the membership started in October 2009? If I join now do I renew the membership in October 2010?

I don't know about your membership, sorry. I just noted that you don't have the tag in your profile "on the left" indicating you're a member.

Just registering on the forum doesn't mean you have applied for a membership in the association. You probably knew that, but I feel like beeing friendly for the search engine.

I usually get an invoice around November, if that's what you mean?

Yep, that's correct. We decided upon the current membership term starting from October based on our club events, which are usually biased between February-September. For the folks joining the club after the last trackday, return of the investment seemed quite poor for the first annual fee, so that's why this current scheme took place a few years ago.

Anyway, welcome to the club and hopefully you'll find your way to Tahko this weekend! It is really an outstanding opportunity to improve your winter driving skills and get to know your quattro on the element where it's at it's best.

It's not so big deal, but prefer links instead of embedding if pics are located in slow server and/or they are large in size. Too large pictures will stretch the threads annoyingly making them difficult to read. Audiclub members can upload images straight to the forum which can of course be embedded with no fear (actually thumbnails are always embedded automatically).

Well I didn't make it to the ice track in the end because I have been concentrating on finding a job so I can stay in Finland. And thankfully I have now found one. So I have sourced 2 spare wheels from a friend in Scotland and they are on the way here via DHL now. Much better than repairing the broken one I think.

rissaspena, thanks. I'll definitely do my best to make some Oulu meetings. Now that I have a job I can relax a bit and allow myself some socialising.

Crash, cheers. what part of ireland were you in? And where are you from originally?

jpakarin, yes absolutely. From what I hear he was a really decent guy. And I appreciate any person with superior driving skills to my own (that's quite a lot then)

Sadly a repair to my front bumper by a previous owner has broken because of high ice ridges and low suspension so I now need to find a B6 front bumper (preferably just the lower section if it comes in 2 pieces). I don't think my car is perfect for Kainuu roads.

yes, right on the north coast. Very popular for sandy beaches and alcohol. Also the North West 200 motorbike road races at the end of May every year.

Fixing cars I can understand much better than race horses. Although at times I swear I know nothing about cars either :-D

                                                    Hello again.
It's one year since I moved to Kajaani and I have been busy getting a job, doing some work on my car and making an ass of myself trying to speak Finnish (basic stuff so far).
In the year I have been here I have changed my front lower valance to an s-line version, added s-line door mouldings, put on a new rear lower valance since the old one was cracked, added a full stainless steel Milltek exhaust and new aero wipers. My planned tasks for the next few months are fitting S4 front grills, heated front seats (I have the heating pads and new B7 climate control unit so I need the wiring looms from a car being dismantled or maybe new wiring looms from Kufatec), I'll fit DIS and Cruise control (A friend is sending me the parts from the UK) and hopefully a double din head unit like the RNS-E (I need to do this since the B7 climate control unit will be too thin for the single din arrangement) but I may have to make do with the symphony to start with since I've already spent quite a lot of money.

Maybe someone new from the Kajaani/Kainuu area has joined the forum over the last year?

With temporary black grill surrounds to see how I will like it http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...3092010359.jpg but I have an S4 upper grill at home and may buy a matching lower S4 grill and modify the valance slightly to make it fit.
Now I need to get busy with a polisher to bring the paint back to life because the new front valance is so fresh

Oh yes, I also have an HID headlight kit ready to install as well. It came as a bit of a surprise to be outside civilization in the dark after a long, bright summer.
I'm open to suggestions for mods too. I may yet change the chrome window trims and roof rails.
